Film Students Urged to Familiarize with Industry Regulations

-

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has advised students pursuing film studies to familiarize themselves with the laws and regulations that govern the film industry.
Speaking during an engagement forum for film students organized by the KCA University, Nairobi Town Campus in collaboration with KFCB on Wednesday, 11th June 2025, Ms. Faridah Masai, a KFCB Senior Classification Officer, underscored the importance of students understanding the Film and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya.
-
The Cap 222 mandates KFCB to regulate the creation, broadcasting, distribution, possession, and exhibition of film and broadcast content to ensure that audio-visual content conforms to Kenya's culture, moral values and National aspirations, as well as to protect children and other vulnerable groups from exposure to inappropriate content
She reiterated the Board's commitment to* collaborating with universities and colleges offering film studies to empower students with knowledge about industry regulations and emerging issues.
“As part of our stakeholder engagement, KFCB is committed to working with universities across the country to ensure that students undertaking film-related studies understand the laws that govern the sector,” she said.
-During the forum, the students were sensitized about KFCB’s regulatory mandate — Film Registration, Classification, Licensing, and Compliance — as stipulated in Cap 222, and other programs spearheaded by the Board.
Ms. Irene Chepkurui, KFCB’s Senior Film Registration Officer, who also spoke at the forum, urged the film students to take advantage of the Gratis License issued by KFCB for student's projects.
She further encouraged the students to leverage technology in pursuit of their careers, emphasizing that technology is the future of work.
Dr. Ibrahim Tirimba, Director, KCA University Town Campus, applauded KFCB for continuously engaging and empowering film students and stakeholders nationwide.
-
“We are grateful that KFCB has continued to partner in our key programs, and we look forward to a strengthened collaboration that will empower our students for the job market,” he said.
The KFCB remains committed to ensuring a facilitative regulatory environment to spur the growth of the film industry in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
