KFCB Hosts Mombasa Aviation Institute's Film & Media Students for an Educational Tour
The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has advised students pursuing film and media studies to familiarize themselves with the laws and code of conduct that govern the film and media sectors respectively.
While addressing film, media, and cabin crew students from the Mombasa Aviation Institute, who visited the KFCB’s Offices in Nairobi on Thursday 23rd May 2024 for an academic tour, Mr. Marcos Masiga, the Board’s Ag. Licensing Manager underscored the importance of students understanding the Film and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222, which regulates the creation, broadcasting, distribution, possession, and exhibition of film and broadcast content, as well as the media code of ethics, among other laws in the sectors.
The students were sensitized about the KFCB’s regulatory mandate (Film Registration, Classification, Licensing, and Compliance), as stipulated in Cap, 222, as well as other programs and campaigns spearheaded by the Board.
Mr. Masiga, lauded the students for their desire to learn about the role of KFCB, noting that the Board is keen on ensuring a facilitative regulatory environment to spur the growth of the film sector in line with the Fifth Pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) as well as the Ministry of Youth Affairs Creative Economy and Sports' TalantaHela Initiative.
“The Creative Economy offers enormous career opportunities for young people and we encourage students to grab the opportunities, especially under the Talanta Hela Initiative,” he said.
Mr. Masiga, further, advised the students to leverage on technology in pursuit of their careers, emphasizing that technology is the future of work. He also urged them to use the internet responsibly and guard their digital footprints.
He also urged the students pursuing film to take advantage of the Gratis license issued by KFCB for educational projects in line with the law and not commercial purposes in their pursuit to create marketable content.
Other KFCB officers who spoke during the sensitization session called upon the students to pursue their careers diligently and become the Board's agents in championing clean content consumption among the youths.
Mr. Oscar Omondi, the Mombasa Aviation College, Head of the Media and Communication Department, applauded the KFCB for empowering future filmmakers and media practitioners.
“We are grateful to KFCB for mentoring future filmmakers and media practitioners through such sensitization forums and we look forward to future collaboration on initiatives aimed at growing the film industry,' he stated.
Institutions of learning are among KFCB’s key stakeholders, especially in the Media Literacy Program and Public Sensitization dubbed: #YouAreWhatYouConsume, which seeks to create awareness on responsible creation and consumption of audio-visual content, as well as the awareness on Government programs, services, and other opportunities in the Creative Economy space.
