Board Meets Exhibitors and Distributors Over Self Classification

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), today, 9th November, 2022, hosted a hybrid stakeholder engagement meeting with film exhibitors and distributors.
The agenda of the meeting was to sensitize the stakeholders on the proposed self classification framework and the revised Film Classification Guidelines.
In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Christopher Wambua, the Board’s Ag Chief Executive Officer, said that the proposed self classification seeks to enhance compliance and align classification to technological changes.
He noted that should the industry adopt the proposal, KFCB will involve broadcasters and online streaming platforms in the examination and rating of film and broadcast content meant to be broadcast, distributed and exhibited on their platforms.
“Under the proposed self-classification framework, broadcasters, VODs and OTTs will self-classify the content meant to run on their respective platforms using KFCB’s Film Classification Guidelines,” he stated.
Mr. Wambua assured stakeholders that the Board will not regulate self-generated content but will monitor the same to ensure that content exhibited, broadcast or distributed does not expose children to adult content.
He observed that the proposed self classification is anchored on the changing regulatory landscape and emerging technological trends and innovations that have seen the production, distribution and exhibition of large volumes of audio-visual content.
“The proposed self classification framework and the revised Film Classification Guidelines will be subjected to public participation for stakeholders to submit their comments in line with the law,” Mr. Wambua said.
Mr. Wambua affirmed KFCB’s commitment to creating a facilitative regulatory environment for the local creative industry to thrive.
“Our aim is to engage industry players in the review of the regulatory frameworks and initiatives so that we create a conducive environment for the growth of the creative industry” he added.
