Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy Programme Rolled Out in Machakos County
In a significant move to bolster the creative arts and film sector, the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), in collaboration with the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund (SASDF), held an engagement forum with local creatives in Machakos County and its environs. This initiative is part of the ongoing Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy Programme (CAFIL), which aims to enhance film literacy and ensure responsible content creation.
The forum, held at Semara Hotel on Friday, December 13th, 2024, brought together filmmakers, actors, musicians, visual artists, and stakeholders from the creative industry. It served as a platform for exchanging ideas, addressing challenges local creatives face, and exploring opportunities for collaboration and growth within the film sector.
Speaking at the event, the KFCB’s Ag. CEO, Mr. Paskal Opiyo, assured creatives of the KFCB’s commitment to ensure a facilitative environment to spur the growth of the film sector in Kenya.
“Through initiatives like the Creatives in Arts and Film Literacy Programme, the KFCB aims to nurture a vibrant creative industry that plays a crucial role in driving cultural and economic development,” he said.
Mr. Opiyo emphasized the need for creatives to embrace standards that uphold national values while also fostering creativity and innovation.
The CAFIL Program seeks to create awareness of the existing legal framework guiding the film industry in Kenya and aligns with the Fifth Pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and Vision 2030 which recognizes Creative Arts as a driver for youth empowerment and wealth creation.
The KFCB has so far rolled out the CAFIL initiative in Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, Embu, and Mombasa regions respectively, and will extend the same to Kirinyaga, Kakamega, before rolling it out to other parts of Kenya.
During the stakeholders’ engagement forum in Machakos, representatives from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Immigration Department, Kenya Wild Life Service (KWS), Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), Office of the Data Protection (ODPC), and the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) made presentations on their respective mandate and how it impacts the film industry.
