Earlier today, Officers from the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) lit up Murang’a University of Technology (MUT) with an engaging sensitisation and mentorship forum that inspired Journalism, Media, and Communication Studies students on responsible media consumption and production, ethical standards in film and digital content creation, and the KFCB’s role in promoting National values through film regulation.
During the lively forum organised by the University, the team unpacked KFCB’s mandate as outlined in the Films and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya, which governs the creation, broadcasting, distribution, possession, and exhibition of audio-visual content. Students were also briefed on various programs and campaigns spearheaded by the Board to foster a facilitative regulatory environment that supports industry growth.

In addition, learners were exposed to emerging opportunities within Kenya’s dynamic film and media sector, including content distribution channels, collaboration platforms for upcoming creatives, and key initiatives under the Creative Economy that support youth-led productions.
Acknowledging the rapidly evolving film and media landscape, the KFCB team encouraged students to embrace technology as a key enabler in their career journeys, emphasising that the future of work is digital. They further urged learners to use the internet responsibly and safeguard their digital footprints.

During the forum, students undertaking film studies were reminded to take advantage of the ‘Gratis Licence’ issued by KFCB for educational projects, strictly for non-commercial purposes, as provided for in the law, as this offers them an opportunity to build skills and develop market-ready content.

Institutions of learning remain key stakeholders in KFCB’s Media Literacy and Public Sensitisation initiatives under the #YouAreWhatYouConsume campaign. The program aims to promote responsible creation and consumption of audio-visual content, while raising awareness of Government programs, services, and emerging opportunities within the Creative Economy.
