How much do you Know about Film Classification?

The Films and Stage Plays Act, Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya mandates the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) to issue certificates of approval for films and broadcast content meant for distribution or exhibition to the public upon classification.
The KFCB examines films to determine their age-appropriateness to ensure that children and vulnerable adults are not exposed to inappropriate content.
In classifying films, the Board is guided by the Film Classification Guidelines, which define the following classifiable elements that are considered: Violence and Crime, Sex, Obscenity and Nudity, Occult and Horror, Drugs, alcohol and other Harmful Substances, Religion and Community and Propaganda for War, Hate speech and Incitement.
Film and broadcast content classified by the KFCB is rated as: GE (General Exhibition), PG (Parental Guidance Recommended), 16 (unsuitable for persons under the age of 16), 18 (Restricted to adults only) and Restricted/banned.
In a bid to ensure a facilitative regulatory environment, the KFCB recently developed self-classification regulations that once enacted will see the involvement of Video-on-Demand (VoD) and Over-the-top (OTT) services as well as broadcasters in the examination and classification of film and broadcast content.
The proposed self-regulatory framework shall be pegged on prior training on the local Film Classification Guidelines and other regulatory requirements.
