Educational Visit by the ICS Film and Journalism Students

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) today hosted students from the Institute of Certified Studies (ICS) College, Department of Journalism and Media Studies. The students paid the Board an academic visit with the aim of acquainting themselves with KFCB’s regulatory mandate, programs and clean content campaigns.
The students were taken through the Board's regulatory mandate (Film Licensing, Film Registration, Examination and Classification, Compliance and Monitoring) as stipulated in the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap222 of the Laws of Kenya as well as programs and campaigns spearheaded by the Board.
The Ag. CEO, Mr. Christopher Wambua, lauded the ICS for excellence in training students in film, media and journalism studies, and their desire to learn about the role of KFCB.
He said that the Creative Arts industry offers enormous career opportunities and encouraged the students to take them up.
Mr. Wambua also urged the students to leverage on technology in pursuit of their careers, noting that technology is the future of work. He also advised them to use the internet responsibly.
Mr. Wambua said that the Government is spearheading key programmes that aim to empower young people pursuing careers in the Film and Media industry.
He noted that the Film Policy Bill once adopted into law will provide incentives to young people seeking to venture into the Creative sector.
The Ag. CEO reaffirmed the Board's support towards the Creative Arts industry, saying "that the process of modernizing the Nairobi Film Centre (NFC) into a State-of-the-Art facility is ongoing," adding that the Board is in the process of acquiring a mobile Cinema truck that will help artistes showcase their work easily under the Board's Sinema Mashinani program.
Mr. Wambua advised the students to take advantage of internet connectivity and tell positive stories through film.
"Film is a powerful tool that we can use to tell positive stories as well as promote our values," he said.
In her remarks, the Board's Corporate Communications Manager, Ms. Nelly Muluka, said that institutions of learning are among the Board’s key stakeholders in the Media Literacy Program and Public Sensitization dubbed: #YouAreWhatYouConsume.
She added that the campaign seeks to create awareness on the Board’s mandate and dangers of consuming harmful content, and advised the students to consume media responsibly.
