Film is Key in Safeguarding Kenya’s Culture

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), Licensing Manager, Mr. Joel Wamalwa, has underscored the important role of film in promoting peace and culture.

Speaking on a panel discussion on the topic: ‘Film as a Tool for Peace’, at the 7th Edition of the Lake International Pan-African Film Festival in Nakuru, Mr. Wamalwa noted that film can be used to champion peace and unity across the world.

“It is a fact that film ignites the feelings of peace, tolerance and compassion among people of different cultures,” he said.

Mr. Wamalwa stated that KFCB recognizes Film and Creative Arts as a vehicle for social change and its key role in promoting and safeguarding Kenya’s culture, moral values, national aspirations as well as socio-economic transformation.

He sensitized participants on the Board’s regulatory mandate, programs and campaigns, noting that KFCB remains committed to creating a facilitative regulatory environment for Kenya’s creative industry to thrive.

KFCB is among partners in the festival that kicked off on Wednesday 2nd and ends on 5th November 2022.

Themed: Film for Peace, the festival, an initiative of Legacy Arts and Film Lab seeks to showcase films produced in African languages with English subtitles.

It further aims at bringing local filmmakers together for networking, recognizing and celebrating artistic talents and promoting African cinematic experience.

Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), officer’s sensitized students and teachers drawn from various schools in Mombasa on clean content consumption.

The students, who visited the Board's exhibition booth at the ongoing Mombasa International ASK Show, were advised to consume clean film and broadcast content as well as to use social media platforms responsibly.

Teachers accompanying the students were also urged to champion child online safety and to support the Board's programs that aim at protecting children from exposure to harmful content.

Learning institutions from the ECD to the university level are among the Board's key stakeholders in our Media and Literacy Campaign dubbed: #YouAreWhatYouConsume.
