Monitor Content Consumed by Children During August School Holidays and Guide Accordingly

In line with the Kenya Film Classification Board's (KFCB) Consumer Advisory function, the KFCB wishes to advise parents, caregivers, and guardians to monitor the audio-visual content that children under their care access and consume—especially during this period when schools are about to close for the August holidays.

As children take a break from their academic routines, they will have increased access to various audio-visual content, including online.
Research has shown that film and media content influence the behaviour and thinking of consumers, especially children, who are most impressionable.
In light of the above, the KFCB appeals to parents to take an active role in guiding their children's viewing habits by:

  •   Setting screen time rules to limit the amount of time children spend on TV and other broadcast channels.
  •   Restricting access to age-inappropriate content through parental control features available on streaming platforms and devices.
  •   Watching audio-visual content together as a family. This not only allows parents to monitor what children are watching but also provides an opportunity for meaningful discussions about the content.
  •   Encouraging children to explore educational and uplifting content that aligns with positive values and promotes creativity and critical thinking.
  •   Reporting content they believe is harmful or inappropriate for children to the KFCB for review and rating for age-appropriateness.

In addition, the KFCB cautions video-show and play station operators and other film exhibitors against admitting children into their premises.
The KFCB remains committed to enhancing parental awareness of emerging technologies through our Parents' Digital Literacy Program (PADIL), aimed at empowering parents with skills to monitor and guide children on content access and consumption across digital platforms.
Protecting children from exposure to inappropriate content is a collective responsibility!
