The Kenya Film Classification Board’s Management, led by the Ag. CEO, CPA Paskal Opiyo, on Tuesday 27th August 2024, held a consultative meeting with TikTok officials, led by Mr. Fortune Mgwili Sibanda, TikTok’s Head of Government Relations and Public Policy, Sub-Saharan Africa when the TikTok officials paid KFCB a courtesy call to discuss collaboration in an online safety campaign dubbed: 'Safer Together'.

The two organizations discussed modalities for partnership in creating awareness on online safety issues, TikTok safety measures and other controls, and working together to safeguard minors and children from exposure to inappropriate content.Β 

Mr. Opiyo lauded the TikTok officials for their partnership request, noting that collaboration in content regulation is key to ensuring that children are not exposed to inappropriate content and safeguarding Kenya's moral fabric.Β

He reiterated that KFCB and TikTok have a lot in common, regarding especially the protection of children from inappropriate content, adding that the Board is committed to working with TikTok and other like-minded public and private institutions for the good of minors, children, and vulnerable adults.Β 

On his part, Mr. Fortune said that TikTok is pleased to partner with KFCB in creating awareness across the country on their online safety campaign which is targeting parents, caregivers, creatives, and learners, among other stakeholders.Β 

The issue of the live sessions was also discussed and the possibility of partnership on the same with KFCB as one of the trusted content moderators in the country to ensure that content conforms to the Board's classification guidelines as well as TikTok' community guidelines.Β

The KFCB has worked with TikTok before in diverse initiatives and besides its regulatory function, the Board has been spearheading other online safety programs such as the Parental Digital Literacy Program (PaDiL) and Media Literacy Program towards responsible content consumption.Β 

The two entities agreed to collaborate on the above and other emerging initiatives for the online safety of minors and vulnerable groups.Β 

The KFCB is a State Corporation under the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, mandated to regulate film and broadcast content to ensure that content conforms to Kenya’s culture, moral values, and National aspirations, as well as to protect children from exposure to inappropriate audio-visual content.
