Protecting Children and Vulnerable Audiences: KFCB’s Commitment to Consumer Safety

The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers of audiovisual content, particularly children and other vulnerable groups, from exposure to age-inappropriate or harmful content.

Speaking on the 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐏𝐨𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭, a channel that hosts interviews on topical issues, KFCB’s Head of Film Classification, Ms. Redemptah Amondi, highlighted the role of KFCB in "𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧” and explained that the Board classifies audiovisual content, including films, music, series, and commercials/advertisements, intended for public distribution and exhibition to ensure it is age-appropriate and conforms to Kenya’s culture, moral values, and national aspirations.

She further outlined the classification process, including the Film Classification Guidelines, which inform age ratings under the Films and Stage Plays Act, Cap. 222, as well as the Self-classification Framework that allows broadcasters, Video-on-Demand (VOD), and Over-The-Top (OTT) platforms to self-classify material exhibited or streamed on their platforms, while KFCB provides training and monitors compliance.
