Board Conducts Validation Workshop for the Proposed Films and Stage Plays Regulations & Guidelines
The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) today 20th June 2023, conducted a stakeholder validation workshop for the proposed Films and Stage Plays Regulations and Guidelines, which the Board published and subjected to public participation.
The exercise, which was held at the Boma Hotel, Nairobi, was graced by Mr. Raymond Ochieng, the Secretary Youth Affairs, who represented the Principal Secretary (PS), State Department for Youth Affairs and the Arts, Mr. Ismail Maalim Madey.
Mr. Ochieng applauded the KFCB team for spearheading the review of the proposed regulations, whose key objective is to create a facilitative environment for the Creative Economy.
The Youth Affairs Secretary appreciated all stakeholders for their submissions and for turning up for the validation workshop.
He noted that the proposed regulations had been informed by the rapid evolution of technology and the emergence of new services/trends in the industry as well as to align the legal and regulatory framework with industry developments and international best practices.
“The review is meant to encourage additional investment in the film exhibition sector and thus provide opportunities for local filmmakers to monetize their talent and content in line with the wider Government’s policy of putting money in the pockets of artists under the Ministry’s Talanta Hela Initiative,” he added.
Mr Ochieng called upon all stakeholders in the creative industry to familiarize themselves with the regulatory frameworks guiding the sector and work with the relevant agencies within the State Department of Youth Affairs and the larger Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Arts and Sports, towards making the industry lucrative.
The Board’s Ag. Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Joel Wamalwa, affirmed the KFCB’s commitment to supporting the creative industry, noting that Government has proposed a 15% reduction in filming fees for local filmmakers in the proposed regulations.
He urged industry stakeholders to support the initiatives being fronted by the Government aimed at spurring the film sector for job and wealth creation.
