KFCB encourages learning institutions to accommodate arts in the education system

Institutions of higher learning have been encouraged to provide platforms to develop creative talents among the youth in the education system.

Speaking during the Marist International University College Culture Day, KFCB CEO Dr. Ezekiel Mutua said film and other forms of creative expression can be used to empower the youth economically.

“The richest people in the world today are in the creative arts and the knowledge economy. The arts have turned into a significant driving force in creation of employment opportunities”, said Dr. Mutua.

The CEO said the Board is committed to unlocking the potential of the creative sector to create jobs for the youth and to enhance the sector’s contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product(GDP).

“In Kenya, the film industry is estimated to be having a potential to generate KSh.200 billion annually. This huge revenue output and job creation capacity promises great opportunities that can be harnessed to transform the country. We are collaborating closely with other countries in the region to maximise the exploitation of these opportunities in the interest of promoting development in the continent”, said Dr. Mutua.

The CEO encouraged young people to focus on important issues such as preservation of the environment and promoting regional peace in their films and other arts. He warned that if filmmakers shied away from telling African stories through film, the stories would continue being told incorrectly by foreigners.

” We have to challenge the false impression created by foreign films that Africa is inferior. Africa is the cradle of mankind, with the best filming locations in the world. We have to restore the dignity of Africa in the arts”, observed Dr. Mutua.

The event featured cultural exhibitions from more than 26 countries from Africa, showcasing the continent’s rich cultural diversity.
