KFCB marks World Theatre Day

Dr. Ezekiel Mutua, MBS, Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) was the Chief Guest at the inaugural edition of the World Theatre Day held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) on March 27th 2018.
Dr. Mutua said that the celebrations, hosted by Mabingwa Theatre, were meant to create a forum for the creatives to discuss the place of theatre, arts, sports, and music in the new school curriculum.
“This Day has been set aside to recognize the glorious skills of arts performances and representation of the invention of a possible future. This day reminds us that we are able to see ourselves in a mirror by exploring our creativity. I encourage young people to embrace innovation in promoting culture, national values and aspirations of the Kenyan people”, said Dr. Mutua.
The CEO added that KFCB is committed to promoting clean content fit for children and that conforms to Kenyan culture, moral values and national aspirations.
“As Kenya’s content regulator, KFCB is committed to unclouding our expressions as a people. Our values and heritage are a gem and the reason we closely examine and classify content. This is to primarily guard children against premature exposure to adult or harmful content,” he added.
Dr. Mutua further stated that KICD is a major player in the formation of values as it shapes children through formal education, adding that theater had found its place with creativity and imagination being incorporated into the new school curriculum.
He added that the Board is committed to partnerships in content development and other efforts geared towards effecting theatre, film and broadcast sectors.
“With the focus of the new curriculum being the application of knowledge and skills, attention to learners is now most needful. It is the high time that we focus on empowering our children to being ethical citizens since their need to thrive is our responsibility,” said Dr. Mutua.
Also present during the celebrations were Mahmoud Majlesein (Cultural Counselor, Iranian embassy to Kenya), Titi Wainaina (veteran actor), Dr. Timothy Njoora, (School of Visual Arts, Kenyatta University), Douglas Macharia (Spanish Embassy), Edwin Gichangi (CEO, Kenya Cultural Center), Ms Harsita Waters (Alliance Francaise) among other dignitaries and players in theatre.
